It is estimated that a woman loses her life every minute due to pregnancy-related complications, the
annual toll being 5 lakh. Irony is, most of these deaths are preventable. White Ribbon Alliance (WRA)
[an international coalition working safe motherhood in developing and developed countries] unites individuals,
organisations and communities who are working to increase public awareness about such loss
of life, and to promote safe motherhood. This year’s theme of National Safe Motherhood Day, falling on
11 April, is: Play Your Part.
India is confronted by the highest number of maternal deaths anywhere in the world, with over 70,000
deaths each year due to pregnancy and related causes. Maternal mortality and morbidity is far greater
in rural India as compared to urban areas. WRA advocates among its members – individuals and
organisations to play their part in a befitting manner, so as to ameliorate the plight of potential mothers,
including pregnant and lactating women.
WRA holds that maternal deaths can be largely prevented by resorting to some basic health interventions.
Access to basic and emergency obstetric care in pregnancy, child birth and post partum
period are some areas in which the stake holders can play their respective roles so as to make pregnancy
safe.
There are 112 organisations in government, semi-government and voluntary sectors besides international
bodies, which collaborate with the prgrammes and campaigns of WRA for making motherhood a
risk-free experience.
What It Takes to Deliver Copy of NJI to Your Doorstep
We have received complaints from some of our readers that they receive the copy of The Nursing Journal
of India (NJI) rather belatedly. As a matter of fact we invariably dispatch all the copies of NJI by 1st or
2nd day of each month, which happens to be the date of posting. This date is duly confirmed by the
Department of Post and we are bound to stick to these dates, since any delay entails heavy penalties,
which we can ill-afford.
We would like to bring to the notice of our readers to process of publication of each issue, which
involves following stages.
Preparation of the Manuscript: The material received from various sources is compiled screened keeping
in view its relevance and use to our readers. For articles, clearance is obtained from the concerned
experts before these are taken up for publication. Efforts are made to include all the news/information
that is sought after by the readers.
All the material is subjected to editing for stylization and correction/elimination of errors that may be
exist in the write-ups. The entire material is then passed on the Typesetter. We generally ensure that
on an average two pages are in Hindi, as per requirement of the Department of Post for availing postal
concession.
Typesetting & Page-setting: After TNAI receives the typeset pages, there may be further editing depending
upon the available space. The typeset pages require at least a couple of readings.
Printing and Binding: The final pages, after which corrections are not easy to be carried out, are sent to
the printers, who normally take a week’s time for printing and binding. The copies are then sent to the
mailers.
Wrapping & Dispatch: The mailers engage some 10-15 persons so that all the copies are made available
to the Indra Prastha Post Office, who are specialist in bulk mailing.

department has a wide network with outreach in every nook and corner of the country. At times there

case the whereabouts of the recipient are not known, TNAI Hqrs may kindly be informed accordingly.
The readers of NJI are also being advised to keep the TNAI Hqrs posted with their updated/ new address,
