her nursing studies in KEM Hospital, Mumbai and Midwifery
Tutor diploma in England she joined TNAI in 1964 and
provided leadership as Secretary - SNA and Secretary
TNAI until 1977. She was associated with many international
organisations and professional bodies. Miss Philip represented
the TNAI on the Commonwealth Nurses Federation and was
a Board member of the CWNF and earlier Regional Field
Director for
All-India
Working Party of the International Confederation of
Midwives and the International Federation of Obstetrics
and Gynaecology (ICM/FIGO). She was at Christian Fellowship
Hospital, Oddanchatram, Tamil Nadu till her death. She
believed that personal touch and individual care matters
more than medical care. Miss Mariam Philip passed away
on 16 July 2008 at Christian Fellowship Hospital, Oddanchatram
(TN) after a sudden heart attack at the age of 91.

TNAI takes special pride in the achievements of Miss
Mariam Philip who served as Secretary TNAI during the
period 1964-1977. As a mark of her contribution to nursing,
TNAI organised a condolence meeting on 28 July 2008
at the TNAI Headquarters.

Miss M. Philip inculcated some of the finest attributes
of stoicism and this fact endeared her to all those
who came in contact with her, during her long tenure
as Secretary of TNAI. She left behind at the TNAI a
glowing record of selfless service and devotion to her
work as its executive head. She initiated several useful
programmes and guided their successful implementation.

Miss
Philip was quick to respond and gave helping hand in
many situations. She received in highest award for her

helped to identify individual problems and solve them

I was studying as a nurse in CFH Oddanchatram, I lost
my mother. She comforted me and assured me love and
support. The essence of Ms. Philip’s contribution
in my life and of many others like me was her willingness
