An Exemplary Nurse Administrator, Worthy Friend and a Caring Human Being

Miss Mariam Philip daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip was born in Tiruvalla, Kerala. She was a Teacher & Incharge of the Creche attached to the school. A labourer once came to her with a request to help his profusely bleeding wife. She explained her inability to help because of lack of medical knowledge. So the man went back disappointed. Later, it was known that the woman had bled to death in the night. She was unbearably upset because the woman, a mother of 3 young children had died without any medical attention. This was a turning point in her professional life, and she quit her teaching profession to become a nurse at the age of 35. She was absolutely sure that it was a call from God.

After her nursing studies in KEM Hospital, Mumbai and Midwifery Tutor diploma in England she joined TNAI in 1964 and provided leadership as Secretary - SNA and Secretary TNAI until 1977. She was associated with many international organisations and professional bodies. Miss Philip represented the TNAI on the Commonwealth Nurses Federation and was a Board member of the CWNF and earlier Regional Field Director for

All-India Working Party of the International Confederation of Midwives and the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ICM/FIGO). She was at Christian Fellowship Hospital, Oddanchatram, Tamil Nadu till her death. She believed that personal touch and individual care matters more than medical care. Miss Mariam Philip passed away on 16 July 2008 at Christian Fellowship Hospital, Oddanchatram (TN) after a sudden heart attack at the age of 91.
