In 24 chapters and 5 appendices, the author discusses the concepts of community health, public health, community health nursing, family, family health nursing, community and family health process, etc. The author holds that nursing knowledge is a fusion of theoretical and practical knowledge, self interest and ethical components. Clinical procedures and theories are described are as per Indian Nursing Council syllabus so as to fulfil the needs of nursing students. Chapters 1 and 2 deal with community health nursing practice as synthesis of nursing theory and public health theory, principles of community health nursing, educational preparation for public health nursing, public health in middle of 18th century, Acts passed during British period and institutions established for public health activities, public health in post independence period till 2007 in five year plans, national health programmes and committees constituted by Government of India.

Chapter 5 is on community health nursing process including a list of common community health problems, statement of nursing diagnosis and nursing care plan as a structure; chapter 6 on home visit including interventions during home visit; chapter 7 on reproductive and child Health with emphasis on concept of RCH, safe motherhood, causes of maternal mortality, package of services for mother and children, services to pregnant mother during antenatal period, conducting delivery, services during post natal period, family welfare services, safe abortion, MTP Act, anaemia prophylaxis, TT injection, preparation for labour, care of breast during pregnancy, minor ailments during pregnancy, postnatal care, breast feeding, breast complications, care to newborn, recording of birth weight, breast feeding, managing hypothermia and preventing infection, resuscitation of newborn and new national immunisation schedule.

Chapter 12 to chapter 24 describe the theories and terminologies.
However, the book does not provide complete information about the procedures and application of theories in public health and community health nursing, and cannot be used as a text book but only as a supplementary book for students. In fact the book could be organised in more systematic way with emphasis on procedures and theories. For example the introduction to community health and community health nursing concepts, historical development in India and concepts of public health, concepts of family, etc. should have been given in chapter 1. In chapter 2, applications of community health nursing process and family health nursing process can be explained with examples. In chapter 3, concepts of epidemiology, etc. can be given in brief. In chapter 4 onwards procedures can be given in detail with guidelines. The nursing theories from chapter 12 to 24 need to be reviewed. Appendices needs to be reviewed and latest guidelines and job responsibilities of community health nursing personnel given by INC/GOI can be given besides some common format of reports and record samples used under NRHM. Clinical cases are not given from the community setting to clarify the concepts.
The book being basically on procedures and theories had its limitations and author has tried to present the same in community health nursing with some degree of satisfaction.

Title of the Book:    Essentials of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing (Vol I and Vol II)
Authors Name:   KP Neeraja
PPublished By:   Jaypee Brothers Medical Publisher Pvt. Ltd.
Year of Publication:    2008
PPrice of the Book:    395

Essentials of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing is a
commendable book which provides adequate information for the students on various aspects of mental health and nursing of psychiatric patients, especially in Indian context. This book has been written by an Indian author who understands the student’s perspective well. The language is simple and can easily be followed by the students.
To facilitate the reader, the book has two volumes. The material in both volumes is well organised, starting with the introduction to mental health then progressing to describe various concepts, disorders, modalities of treatments etc.

However, what is lacking in the book is that the Nursing Process aspect has not been given due importance. The Nursing Care Plan provided for each disease condition is not explained as required. The book lacks illustrations, diagrams and examples that could have brought more clarity for the readers. Further, addition of clinical cases would have made the book more interesting and useful. Coverage of case studies from the clinical field would have added to the value of the book which thus making the learning more effective and lasting.

The book also requires more advanced information regarding psychopharmacology and substance use disorder. These chapters need updating with description of nursing implications and necessary interventions.
Overall, this book is a good reference for the students as well as for the teachers, as it helps to provide additional informative material. Nursing professionals will be benefitted by this book in enhancing their knowledge, skill and attitude while caring for their clients.

TThis text book for midwives and those practicing
obstetrics nursing has been written in a simple way – simple language with many illustrations, in an easy to follow style. It is quite suitable for the General Nursing and Midwifery students.

The book is divided into XIV Sections, with each section giving chapters and the main topics. All the chapters are organised in a logical manner. The book starts with history and trends of Maternal and Child health in India. It also covers the details of legal and ethical aspects of Obstetrics, Labor analgesia. The Laws regarding birth and death will help the nursing personnel, specially domiciliary nurses. The section on pharmacotherapeu-tics has an exclusive chapter on Drugs in Midwifery. The recommendations given by the expert Advisory group in May 2004 outlines the list of drugs which a nurse is entitled to administer. Such information is hard to find in similar books.

Throughout the book the, author refers to the role and responsibilities of nurses. Every chapter deals with general topics. The book gives in detail the treatment option for many ailments. As the book is mainly written for the nurses it could have included nursing process as well. The approach adopted in the book makes it much easier for a nursing student to follow and helps her to prepare nursing care plan, according to the patient’s needs.

Cost of the book is affordable for the students. It is suggested that the book should have a CD with questionnaire to help the students and the practicing nurses. This book is over all quite useful for the students and practitioners of midwifery.

The authors deserve appreciation for their efforts in bringing out the book as per revised syllabus of general nursing and midwifery courses. Authors have covered the entire revised syllabus in one volume. The book contains nine chapters, and each chapter begins with specific Objectives. The headings and sub headings in each chapter are well organised. The main points have been highlighted for easy recapitulation. Authors have used their clinical management and teaching expertise to bring out innovative thoughts practiced in Indian hospitals and nursing Institutes. All the procedures /nursing skills are explained systematically and with rationale. First aid topics are covered in detail. This book is specifically prepared for general nursing and midwifery students. I feel that this book contains useful insights for the GNM students. I am sure that this book will prepare the nurses to provide qualitative nursing care in the hospital and the community settings.

Some strong points of the book are : it is simple and easy to comprehend; each chapter begins with specific objectives; steps of various procedures are explained well giving the underlying scientific principles; colourful figures illustrate the nursing skills vividly.

At the same time, there are certain weak areas too for example the important topics like Waste management, Legal aspect in nursing have not been covered in the book. Also, summary at the end of each chapter would have made the book more useful.
