The only constant in our age and times is, paradoxically the `Change' and why not? For, evolution is the key to growth and improvement. Each age presents a new set of complexities, problems and difficulties and the existing solutions are ever rendered ineffective so that new ways, new methodologies, new measures are required to be introduced. Like in systems and procedures, if appropriate changes are not ushered in mindsets, no growth and development would take place.
For quite some time, we at TNAI had been considering to bring out a journal that could provide a forum for sharing of their research findings among nursing academia. The existing Nursing Journal of India (NJI), with limited space could carry not more than a couple of articles as other important items could not be dropped. It was therefore decided to bring in a monthly news bulletin and introduce an additional bi-monthly exclusively to academic and research matters. It was further decided, drawing on the century old tradition of NJI to retain the nomenclature of NJI for the bimonthly research periodical.
Despite a century old history of it being published regularly without break and an enormous captive readership, in keeping with the taste of people NJI did not look like the one that could catch attention of lay reader with a modicum of interest in nursing matters. To put it bluntly, it was not attractive enough. Any consideration to make it palatable by upgrading its paper or making it colourful meant pumping more money which was not possible within the component of funds earmarked for NJI. Its face so to say, could not be made more presentable and its growth remained stunted.
It was this background which often made members of Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) raise the issue of somehow improving the quality of NJI. The EAB deliberated on this issue many a times and was always taken as an important agenda for discussion by these members.
At long last, the Executive Committee/Council of TNAI in its meeting held in November 2010 at Kochi, Kerala decided to constitute a Steering Committee on `Facelifting of NJI'. The Steering Core Committee which was constituted for giving their recommendations comprised of the following members: Mr AB Kulkarni, Former President TNAI, Mrs Cheryl Susan Tada, President, Arunachal Pradesh State Branch, TNAI, Dr Sunita Lawrence, President, Madhya Pradesh State Branch, TNAI, Mrs Saroj Nalini Pradhan, President, Orissa State Branch, TNAI, , Mrs Jaeny Kemp, President, Tamil Nadu State Branch, TNAI, Mrs. Sikha Maity (Pradhan), Secretary, West Bengal State Branch, TNAI. A Facelifting Committee that included the EAB members was also formed to discuss the matter of improving the NJI in its present shape and size, and bring out another monthly news bulletin. The committee comprised of the following mem¬bers Prof (Sr) Gilbert, President, TNAI and Chairperson, Ms Surekha Sama, Hony.Treasurer, TNAI, Dr Pratima Mitra, Consultant, RCH-ll, NIHFW, New Delhi, Mrs Raminder Kalra, Principal, CON, Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi, Mrs. Rita Sapra, Principal, SON, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital New Delhi, MrAnees Chishti, Former Editor TNAI, MrAB Kulkarni, Former President ,TNAI, Dr Manju Vatsa, Principal, CON, AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr. Sandhya Gupta, Secretary INC, New Delhi, Mr HK Bharthwal, Part-time editor, The NJI and Mrs Sheila Seda, Secretary General, TNAI
It was finally agreed that the existing 24-page black & white NJI may be replaced by two periodicals, one 16-page monthly news bulletin for free distribution to TNAI members and an enhanced The NJI that would be bi-monthly, priced and published with limited number of copies.
With enhanced issue of The NJI in your hands, it shall be befitting to say thanks to those who helped in the emergence of the 48-page NJI in its new shape.
