GLIMPSES OF THE YEAR GONE BY

WORKSHOPS ORGANISED
With a view to meet the new challenges in emerging health and technologically advanced scenario, during the year 2011, two workshops were organiaed by TNAI at its New Delhi headquarters.

A national workshop on Advanced Educational Technology in Nursing for Quality Patient Care, held during 23 February - 2 March 2011, drew 21 participants from nine States of the country.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr AK Sood, Professor & Head,
Department of Education & Training, National Institute of Health & Family Welfare (NIHFW), New Delhi. The dignitaries and experts addressing the participants included, inter alia, Dr Bimla Kapoor, 1st Vice President TNAI & Professor, School of Health Sciences (SOHS), IGNOU; Dr Rajni Bagga, Professor & HOD Mgmt Sciences, NIHFW; Dr Pity Koul from SOHS, IGNOU; Dr Manju Vatsa, Principal, College of Nursing, Dr Nalin Mehta, Associate Professor, Mrs Meena Aggarwal, Sr Lecturer, Dr BV Adkoli and Mr Yogesh Kumar from AIIMS; Ms Raminder Kalra, Principal - CON, Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi. The concluding session was chaired by Dr (Prof) Deepak Kumar, Chairperson Zakir Hussain Centre for Educational Studies, JNU.

A national workshop on Nursing Management of Newborn and Young Children was conducted during 3 - 10 August 2011to upgrade the knowledge and skills of nurse professionals in management of newborn and young children so that they can deliver improved care at various levels in health care system. Dr NK Dhamija, Asst Commissioner (Child Health & Immunisation), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare inaugurated the workshop that was attended by 29 representatives from 10 States/ UTs.
    Various subjects covered in the workshop like Feeding and Lactation Mgmt of Young Infants and Children, Behaviour Change and Counselling, Concepts and Interventions in Newborn and Child Health, Newborn and Child Health Challenges, Identification & Care of High risk Newborn and Low Birth Weight Babies, Thermoregulation and Prevention of Hypothermia and Neonatal Resuscitation, Prevention and Control of Infection in NICU, etc. were taken by eminent experts including Dr Manju Vatsa, Principal- College of Nursing and Prof Vinod Paul, AIIMS; Dr Bimla Kapoor, 1st Vice President TNAI & Professor - School of Health Sciences (SOHS), IGNOU; Ms Surekha Sama, Tutor, Deendayal Upadhyay Hospital; Dr Harish Chellani, Safdarjung Hospital; Dr Arvind Saili, Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital; Dr Pity Koul from SOHS, IGNOU; Dr Ajay Gambhir, Secretary MNF; Dr Jyoti Sarin, Ms Jeeva and Mrs Geetanjali from MM College of Nursing Ambala; Dr JP Dadhich from BPNI; Dr Renu Paruthi from WHO-NPSP; Mrs Poonam Joshi, Tutor, AIIMS; Ms AT Kora, Nsg Suptdt, St Stephen's hospital. Concluding session was graced by Dr VK Anand, Health Specialist, Child Health Division, UNICEF India County Office, New Delhi.


PADMA SHRI AWARD TO
SMT SIIANTI TERESA LAKRA, ANM

Kudos to you, Smt Shanti Teresa Lakra!
Smt Lakra has brought laurels to the nurses of the country through her self-less, dedicated services as a trained auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) in Port Blair, A&N Islands under Directorate of Health Services.
   Born on 1 May 1972 in a remote village of Rangat, Middle Andman, Smt Lakra hails from aboriginal Oraon community (in Jharkhand). Her committed, courageous and painstaking services among primitive and endangered tribals, besides commendable services rendered post Tsunami devastation of December 2004 brought her the coveted Padma Shri Award, which is given by President of India. To honour Smt Lakra, TNAI organised a Felicitation function at its headquarters on 29 March 2011 that was chaired by Dr Bimla Kapoor, Professor SOHS, IGNOU. The event was graced, besides Smt Sheila Seda, Secretary General TNAI, by Mrs Satish Chawla, Vice President CNF, Mrs Surekha Sama, Hony Treasurer TNAI and senior members of TNAI Executive who appreciated the endeavours of Padma Shri recipient.


INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY CELEBRATIONS
Each year on 12 May, the nurses in all countries observe the International Nurses Day as a tribute to the legendary Florence Nightingale, who was born on this day, way back in 1820. The lady with lamp, since, keeps to nurture among nurses the world over, the spirit to serve the ailing and the suffering. International Council of Nurses (ICN) has been celebrating International Nurses Day since 1965. The theme of 2011 was, `Closing the Gap: Increasing Access and Equity'.

TNAI celebrated International Nurses Day on 13 May with Dr AK Walia, Minister of Health & Family Welfare i inaugurating the programme. Sr Gilbert, TNAI President, Mr T Dileep Kumar- Nursing Advisor to Government of India, Dr Bimla Kapoor, Professor SOHS, IGNOU and Ms Surekha Sama, Hony Treasurer TNAI addressed the participating nurses, nurse students and others at this occasion. students and others at this occasion.

STAMP RELEASE FUNCTION

As the centenary celebrations of TNAI were still continuing, it was decided to approach the Philately Division with request to consider releasing a stamp on completion of 100 golden years of TNAI.

Ultimately, the D day came on 30 September when a modest ceremony
was held in lawns of TNAI Hqrs with Smt Sheila Dikshit, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Govt of NCT of Delhi as chief guest. The function began with a team of students from Lady Hardinge College of Nursing presenting the welcome song. Also present at the occasion were Prof Kiran Walia, Hon'ble of Social Welfare, GNCTD, besides Rameshwari Handa, Chief Postmaster General, Delhi Circle; Prof Sister Gilbert, President TNAI; Mrs S Chawla, former President TNAI, Mrs Gracy Math, 2nd First Vice President TNAI, Smt Sheila Seda- Secretary General TNAI and others. da- Secretary General TNAI and others. da- Secretary General TNAI and others.

At this function, Prof Sr Gilbert, President TNAI outlined the varied activities
 of the organisation at national and zonal levels. It was quite exhilarating to witness Smt Rameshwari Handa, Chief Postmaster General, Delhi Circle releasing the stamp. Amidst an august gathering consisting of top nursing personnel and others, the first set of stamps was presented to the Chief Minister, Smt Sheila Dikshit. The thematically designed stamp, indicating the three aspects of nursing: attention to the sick child, care of the aged and readiness to perform general duties, was prominently highlighted in the display board. As a token of memento, in keeping with slogan of `Greening Delhi' the dignitaries were presented saplings by TNAI.

SISTER GILBERT PARTICIPATED IN CNF CONFERENCE IN MALTA



TNAI President Prof (Sr)Gilbert participated in 20th Commonwealth Nurses Federation CNF Biennial Conference and General Body meeting at Malta 29-30 April 2011. The theme of the Conference was, Nurses and Midwives: Meeting the Challenges of 21 stCentury.

A TNAI delegation of members visited the Hon'ble President of India, Smt Pratibha Devisingh Patil on 7 November 2011, at 12:15 pm. The purpose of the delegation consisting of Mrs Satish Chawla, Former President, TNAI, Mrs Sheila Seda, Secretary-General, TNAI, Mrs Shoba George, Asst Secretary General, TNAI, Mrs Annie Kumar, President TNAI, Delhi State Branch, Mrs Santosh Yadav, Secretary TNAI, Delhi State Branch, was to request her to kindly inaugurate the CIN/ECH building set-up at Knowledge Park III, Greater Noida. Also seen on the extreme right is Mrs Sheela Nair, Staff Nurse working at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Presentation of Primary Survey Report on Elderly Care Home of TNAI
on 12 November 2011 at TNAI Headquarters

Post-graduate students of RAK College of Nursing (RAK, CON), New Delhi who conducted the primary surrey on Elderly Care Home of TNAI at Greater Noida. The survey was undertaken by TNAI to assess the elderly population in and around Greater Noida and to identify the facilities expected from elderly home.
