Zero Discrimination. Zero AIDS-related Deaths . The killer disease takes significant toll each year, an estimated 25 million people died of AIDS between 1981 and 2007. About 33.4 million people live with HIV/ AIDS worldwide, the vast majority of whom are in low- and middle income countries. An estimated 2.7 million people were newly infected with the virus in 2008 and around 2 million people die every year from HIV/ AIDS.
Its aetiology attributed to HIV - is a retrovirus that infects and damages cells of the immune system and its function. With progression of infection, the immune system is rendered weaker and susceptible to infections. AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV infection, though it may take 10-15 years for an HIV-infected person to develop AIDS. Antiretroviral drugs are known to thwart the progression of the disease. HIV is transmitted through unprotected anal or vaginal sexual intercourse, transmission of contaminated blood, sharing of contaminated needle and between a mother and her infant during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) prevents the spread of HIV virus from multiplying in the body and enables the body s immune cells to live longer and overcoming infections.
Mother-to-child-transmission is almost entirely avoidable, but access to preventive interventions remains low in most low- and middle-income countries. Majority of people living with both HIV and TB reside in sub-Saharan Africa. On World AIDS Day, many community, national and international leaders issue proclamations on supporting and treating people living with HIV and AIDS and stimulating research into the treatment of these conditions. Local communities may hold events to remember and honor members who have died of AIDS-related conditions or exhibitions around the subject.
HUMAN RIGHTS DAY: 10 DECEMBER

With a view to draw the attention of world community towards eliminating all forms of injustice, cruelty and exploitation, Human Rights is celebrated on 10 December each year. The nations and civil bodies are urged to take necessary measures to ensure that people are free from discrimination, injustice and subjugation of in any form or manner, and human dignity is not compromised.
History: The enormous damage and loss of valuable human lives in the Second World War shook the entire world. In addition to plethora of lives lost, the world witnessed probably the most macabre human rights violation during the time. The war was a wake up call in a way, for the entire human race. In 1945, the founding member countries of the then newly established United Nations, joined hands to draft laws to promote and protect the primary human rights of its citizens. In 1948, the combined efforts of these countries paid off in the form of proclamation of Universal Declaration of Human Rights by United Nations General Assembly. This was the declaring which established that respect for human rights and human modesty is the pillar of freedom, peace and justice in the world. Later, in 1950, the UN called on all member States and organisations around the globe to commemorate World Human Rights Day on 10th of December every year.
Human rights are interlinked and interdependent rights inherent to all human beings without any discrimination of any nationality, ethnic origin, sex, religion, language, or cast and creed or any other status, as stated by the UN.
All governments across the world are liable to uphold, express, and guarantee the basic human rights in all its purity by means of laws in the forms of law, general principles treaties, primary transnational laws, and other international laws.

:: POLICY & POSITION STATEMENT :: RESOURCES & PUBLICATION :: THE NURSING JOURNAL OF INDIA
MEMBERSHIP DETAILS :: ADVERTISE WITH US :: EVENT DIARY :: WHAT'S NEW :: SIGN OUR GUEST BOOK :: CONTACT US :: NURSE PLEDGE
Trained Nurses' Association of India (TNAI)
