Experience with Bringing out NJI in New Shape

Being part of the Publication Section in an organisation is always a learning experience. It is so because, unlike in other routine assignments, one never edits or processes for publication the same material, it is always new; we hardly repeat the material that has gone into print previously, except of course some fix announcement. Yet, that `old' matter is also to be re-looked at, to see its relevance and use. In getting the materials for monthly periodical or other publications one ever comes across new words, new usage, new information that is always enriching provided one has inquisitive spirit.
Publication of monthly, time-bound journal is nothing short of a challenge. There are issues like date of posting in the face of which no compromise with deadlines is possible. Then, some margins have to be taken for possible delays on the part of printers or mailers. So, in a way, stress and strain are parts of personnel working in publications.
The publication of the Nursing Journal of India had been going on in its traditional form for more than a hundred years. Then come's the historical decision to publish in its place two periodi¬cals, one a monthly news bulletin of 16 pages and an enhanced 48 page The Nursing Journal of India. It was also decided that these two publications may be brought out in December 2011. As we had time constraints there was tremendous increase in workload that had two aspects: one, getting the material in shape to be printed; second, numerous formalities to be completed well in time.
It was quite arduous and at times wearisome to contact the licensing officials, extracting proper information and obtaining relevant forms to be submitted after being duly filled in. Several visits were made to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)- Licensing, Defence Colony for filing of papers and to the RNI Offices in Chanakyapuri and R.K. Puram to discuss about registration, title clearance, possibility of concession from the post office, etc. Another big involvement was in identification of printers following relevant procedures, having meetings with the printers, com¬poser and the mailer individually and then jointly to discuss on how the activities would be coordinated amongst. Contract letters to printers and the mailers had also got to be prepared and convincing the existent printer about the termination of contract was quite a difficult one. With all the essential spadework done, we finally received the clearance for the 48-page bimonthly journal while the permission for monthly news bulletin is likely to be received shortly. One step forward is better than standing still and so we are ready with the 48-page bimonthly journal for the month of December 2011. The new enhanced version of NJI in its new shape, content and tenor may not be in the exact form as was desired by all of us due to many constraints especially limited personnel, infrastructure and time, we believe nevertheless that it shall be welcome by the nursing academic community.
We are especially thankful to Mr. HK Barthwal, Part Time Editor, NJI for all his assistance. Let us now look forward for these positive changes in the presence of a full-fledged publication depart¬ment with added manpower and infrastructure.
