The Glorious, Centarian NJI !

The Nursing Journal of India (NJI) is celebrating 100 years of disseminating the concerns and perceptions of nursing community through its pages, and marching ahead…

In a space of about two years after the The Trained Nurses’ Association of India (TNAI) came into being in 1908, a need was felt to bring out a periodical that would vent out the distinct concerns and anxieties of the nursing community, and thus appeared the first issue of Nursing Journal of India, that was dated February 1910. NJI has been the mouthpiece of over two lakh members which include Nurses, Student Nurses, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives and Lady Health Visitors. The outstanding features of NJI has been its uninterrupted publication initio, something to be proud of the events and programmes of nurses and nursing organisations and institutions have been regularly covered in NJI. The most recent of these includes the TNAI Centenary Celebrations inaugurated by then Hon’ble Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss at a function with Hon’ble Chief Minister of NCT, Delhi, Mrs Sheila Dikshit as the Guest of Honour and other dignitaries, held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on 22 January 2008 and concluding at TNAI Maharashtra State Branch in Mumbai by none other than the Former President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

Naming of lane outside TNAI Headquarters in Green Park after the legendary nurse Florence Nightingale, conduct of socio-economic programmes by TNAI in States, conferrment of Florence Nightingale Awards by the President of India on International Nurses’ Day on 12 May every year were some of the focus area of NJI. There are several issues like Nurses Welfare Fund with provision of monthly grant for needy (disabled, handicapped, aged or sick) members, submission of memoranda to the Central Pay Commission, representations, status of TNAI and SNA scholarships, TNAI Centenary Awards, details of new life membership card, networking with national and international agencies, conduct of workshops and conferences by TNAI related to Safe Motherhood, Child Nutritious and Survival, Care of Infants and Children, publications of TNAI, Nightingale Initiative for Global Health, global campaign gathering for 2 million signatures from all 192 UN members’ states, UN Resolution for an International Year of Nurses in 2010, centennial of Florence Nightingale death, UN resolution for UN decade for a healthy world 2011-2220, TNAI supporting and signing Nightingale Declaration of Commitment to a Healthy World by 2020, progress in construction of Elderly Care Home and Central Institute of Nursing (CIN) & Research Centre in Greater Noida, nurses’ Representative in Rajya Sabha, establishment of new TNAI branches, latest and available publications, continuing education programmes in nursing, membership promotion, and so on are the subjects covered in various issues of NJI for the benefit of readers.

We have been endeavouring to devise ways to improve the contents and aesthetics of NJI, our limitations notwithstanding. At the same time we urge the readers to give their suggestions for the betterment of NJI.
