JOYCE SIKDAR
Joyce Sikdar is a well known nurse for her contribution
in activities of National Health Programmes in the remote
and inaccessible Bongaon Village of Rangat Tehsil in
Andaman & Nicobar Islands. She has done passionate
work in maintenance of Pediatric ward. She has performed
round the clock duties during the Tsunami in December
2004 and January 2005. Her prompt action helped in saving
the lives during the incidence of a bus accident in
Panchvati in 2002. She has also been well appreciated
by Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Andaman & Nicobar,
AIDS Control Society of Port Blair Administration for
her remarkable services.
DR SANTOSH KUMARI
Dr Santosh Kumari has made remarkable contribution for
imparting behavioural therapy training to the patients
with urinary incontinence. The intervention has been
adopted by Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics,
PGIMER Chandigarh for successfully dealing She has been
awarded Best Nurse of PGIMER Chandigarh in the year
1983. The handbook written by her in Hindi on management
of urinary incontinence is distributed free to the OPD
patients.

ME PATLIA Patlia has been one of the pioneer
member in her efforts to start MSc(N) Programme as well
as to establish Chhattisgarh Nursing Council. She has
been instrumental in formulating ordinance for BSc(N)
and MSc(N) in Pt Ravi Shankar Shukla University, Raipur.
She is a Master |
Trainer
under Global Fund for AIDS Project. She is actively
involved in promoting staff development activities
in the state.
MAJ GEN T PADMINI
Maj Gen T Padmini, Dy Dir MNS has served in various
capacities. Her innovation of infant cap with cloth
spectacles and removable POP cast/ splints made from
available resources used in care of neonate with hyperbilirubinemia
and immobilisation of critically ill children are
proved to be very useful. She has contributed towards
awareness programmes aiming at safety of girl child,
elderly care home and modernisation of military hospitals
in the country. She is the first ever Nurse who has
visited UN Mission hospitals at Congo and Lebanon
to obtain first hand information on nursing care facilities
provided to International clientele.
MRS ANITA FERNANDES COUTINHO
Anita Fernandes has introduced various changes in
Leprosy Hospital and received recognition from Mr
Y Sasakawa, WHO Goodwill Ambassador. She has worked
day in and day out when all nurses in Goa went on
strike in the year 1995. She managed victims of riots
during 1986. MR BAGTHARIA MANSUKHLAL He is a well
known literary expert especially for the mass campaign
programmes on Female infanticide, Nirogi bal, Betti
bachao programme, and prevention of cancer. His innovative
ideas on IEC programmes have been well appreciated
by the organisers and authorities. His poems, songs
and slogans on health and social issues are highly
ap-

and widely accepted by the local people.
MS SHAKUNTALA B NAGARADDI
Shakunthala is working at CHC Taluk Shirahatti, District
Gadag, Karnataka. Her Services to the Community are
duly recognised by the community. She has been participating
in Laparoscopic surgery and eye camps. She has a record
of good number of deliveries conducted by her without
any complications. She is actively involved in all the
National Health Programmes.

ALBINA DKHAR
Albina Dkhar presently working as Head Nurse in the
Community Health Department, Nazareth Hospital, Shillong
has been giving untiring services to the citizens in
the difficult and remote villages of Shillong for the
past two decades. She saved lives of a family from mushroom
poisoning, saved mothers, who were dying from loss of
blood related to abortion. Dkhar saved the life of an
asthma patient transported him safely from a distance
of 10 km with timely nebulisation (2007), safely transported
a woman to a nearby hospital who was in hypovolemic
shock due to acute gastroenteritis.

THOUNAOJAM CHAOBA LEIMA
Thounaojam Chaoba Leima started her career working in
operation theatre in a charitable clinic and soon completed
her diploma in Public Health Nursing. At present she
is working as a Principal at School of Community Nursing,
Lamsang. She has participated in many talk shows on
All India Radio on Role of Nurse for care of ante-natal
and post-natal mothers. She is author to the book “Handbook
of Nutrition”. She has also produced a video film
on “Infertility and Child Adoption” in Manipuri
language. She has been awarded Gold Medal for best celebration
of World Breast Feeding week in the year 2008 and 2009.
MS PHEIROIJAM RANI DEVI
Pheiroijam Rani Devi, serving the people of Manipur,
has contributed significantly towards care of mother
and child for almost a decade. She has been enthusiastically
involved in “Prevention of Parent to Child HIV
Transmission”, activities of Department of Gynae
& Obst at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences,
Imphal, a Voluntary Organisation namely Progressive |
Health
Care Organisation (PHCO) and also through State Commission
for Women. She has been honoured for her work by Population
Foundation of India for her association with Network
of People living with HIV/ AIDS, Universal Caring
Mission, and Rural Area Social Development Association.

K THANSIAMI K. Thansiami has touched lives
of many and memorable incidents include care of 4
orphan infants, inspite of ostracism from parents
and without any financial aid from any source. One
of the infant was adopted after 8 months, one girl
has been married and two boys have found suitable
employment.
In
the year 1983, when arrangements for conduct of family
welfare camps were not there she offered her house
premises in Durtlang village. Her praiseworthy nursing
skills include saving life of retired school teacher
with perforated appendix (2005), an old women from
strangulated hernia in 1964. Thansiami provided voluntary
services in the clinic of doctors for Burma refugees
from 2000-2004.

KAPZAWNI
Kapzawni started her career as Paramedical worker
and rose to the level of lecturer at Mizoram College
of Nursing. Her devotion to the care of leprosy for
over a decade is remarkable. She had been taking care
of Suntangi - a patient suffering from leprosy, ostracised
by family and community. Suntangi was visited twice
in a week for four years by Kapzani and was further
helped to get surgical treatment for contractures.
This changed the attitude of the family and community
towards leprosy. Suntangi was accepted back in the
family after four years of lonely confinement in a
hut amidst a jungle area.
MS DAISY MARTIN
Daisy Martin has been recognised for her extra ordinary
ability to manage any ward /OPD independently. She
voluntarily helps community by donating rice, wheat,
fruits to the poor and home for orphans. Besides she
finds time to feed physically challenged children.
Her active involvement in Tsunami relief work through
the organisation of Puducherry Women’s Conference
has been certified by the organisation. She has managed
the entire emergency medical services for 22 days
during the time of strike of nurses in the year 2006
without absence of even a single day.

MARY RATNAM
Mary Ratnam has a long list of remarkable achievements.
She has established a home for orphaned elders with
comprehensive coverage of services to 200 elders,
childcare home for 40 cobbler children and got soft
shoes made by them for leprosy patients. She started
community health providers training programme in local
area in 2003. She is providing direct health care
services to 176 cases out of 343 positive cases registered
with HIV/AIDS.
Her other area of work is related to water conservation,
reconstruction and use for multipurpose water resources
with the help of community involvement in Athangaripatty
since 1997-98. Mary Ratnam is the recipient of literacy
award for National Adult Education Programme (1996
to 2001) and Citation award by Water Aid, London,
in 1999 & 2000.
DR PV RAMACHANDRAN
Prof Ramachandran has eloquent testimony of his professional
activities and achievements. He has conducted various
continuing nursing education courses, and conferences
at regional and national level. His long standing
association with Ramachandra College of Nursing and
worthy contributions to nursing education and nursing
literature are well known to the nursing fraternity.
He has conducted television programs on nursing history
and development.
MS LALITA BISHT
Lalita Bisht saved the life of a mother in labour
in her neighbourhood who became unconscious after
delivery and was bleeding profusely. Lalita had quickly
disinfected polythene and used it as glove to remove
retained placenta. Her efforts in providing extra
diet to tuberculosis patient and psychological support
to a depressed teenager helped in their recovery and
getting discharge from the hospital. She also provided
services to victims of bus accident brought to BP
Pandey Hospital, Uttarakhand.
MS KEYA BISWAS
Keya Biswas has been trained as Nurse Midwifery Practitioner
and is practicing since 2002- 03. She played a commendable
role in motivating the people to increase the coverage
of immunisation activities in Murshidabad District,
West Bengal. She is involved in providing Mother and
Child health services round the

in addition to her job responsibilities.
PROF ARUNJYOTI BARUAH
Prof Baruah is working as an Assistant Prof LGB Regional
Institute of Mental Health, Assam. She has significantly
contributed towards patient care services in the hospital.
She had been instrumental in starting diploma in psychiatric
nursing in the institute in the year 2001 which is
first of its kind in the North East region. She is
instrumental in the starting of MSc(N) course. She
has also been participating in the scientific sessions
of the Regional, National, International conferences
of Indian Society of Psychiatric Nurses. She has started
mental health nursing activities for adolescents in
the schools of Tezpur district.
MS MC HONNAYAK
MC Honnayak is working in Yendigeri Sub Centre since
18 years. She has successfully conducted large number
of deliveries. Her contribution in immunisation programmes
is noteworthy. She is actively involved in DOTs programme
and has duly contributed in NRHM and all National
Health Programmes. She has been awarded best worker
at taluka level.
MS REKHA LAXMAN GAIKWAD
Rekha Laxman has conducted record number of deliveries
without complication. She has been awarded for her
active participation in all National Programmes and
Pulse Polio Programme. She has also been awarded by
Panchayat Samity, Dahanu for achieving 100% coverage
for registration
of eligible couples, use of temporary and permanent
methods of contraception under National Family Welfare
Program.
MS DROILA WARBAH
Droila Warbah, is working in a Rural Health Centre,
Thangsning, Meghalaya. Her valuable contribution includes
expansion of the Centre to conduct better MCH Services,
construction of road for easy transportation of patients,
donation of furniture, linen, refrigerator and free
water supply from the near by water source. Warbah
has independently handled and saved the life of mother
in labour by successfully delivering the breech baby.
On another occasion she saved a 3 years old girl with
Protein Energy Malnutrition who collapsed at home
and a 24 years old man who refused to go to hospital
and collapsed due to diarrhea and dehydration. She
has helped villagers for making 24

groups in support of activities of Family Welfare Programme.
MS S NISA
S Nisa is ANM posted at Makui Primary Health Sub-Centre
Manipur. She is providing extraordinary health services
to the people of 12 villages i.e., during off hours
she provides services to the old and handicapped. She
was actively involved in administering radical treatment,
distribution of mosquito nets and giving health education
on prevention of malaria during an outbreak in the year
1994, 2008 & 2009. She even let her own house be
used by the victims. Her services are duly acknowledged
by State Government and also by villagers.
MS LHAKMIT LEPCHA
Lhakmit Lepcha is well known ANM for her contribution
to the poor and tribal people of Gor in North Sikkim
for more than 25 years. Ever since her appointment as
ANM in Sub-Centre Gor, the health scenario has changed
remarkably. Tribal people have started accepting health
care facilities more readily. She has achieved 100%
coverage in immunisation and provided services to Ante
Natal mothers. Her sincere efforts have been appreciated
by villagers, and State Government.

V VALARMATHI
V Valarmathi is a very dedicated health care provider
to the people of Kanai Block Vullupuram, Tamil Nadu.
She has achieved 100% performance in conducting deliveries
without any complication which has been appreciated
by the State Government. Her contribution in immunisation
and family planning activities is praiseworthy. She
is actively involved and has provided quality services
in MCH activities, registration of births and deaths.
Her excellent contribution
in all National Health Programmes has been recognised
by the village people, and Panchayat in Kanai.
MS BANA RANI CHOUDHURY
Bana Rani Choudhury is very familiar for the Bamutia
villagers. She has played a major role in organising
various unique activities related to National Health
Programs like controlling spread of HIV/AIDS, MCH Camps,
Village Health Day, Bed Net Programme, Measles Camp,
Care for Girl Child, Health Awareness Programme, Leprosy
Health Programme. |

SANTHAKUMARI AMMA
The Major achievements of Santhakumari Amma are 100%
coverage for immunisation against DPT/OPV, Hepatitis
B, Measles, registration of all ante natal mothers,
infants, cases of sterilisation and 95% coverage of
IUD cases in the year 2007 and 2009. In the year 2005
she made significant contribution in camps for services
related to Leprosy Control Programme, Tuberculosis,
HIV/AIDS, Cancer Care, Communicable and Non Communicable
Illnesses, Pulse Polio Immunisation, Multi Drug Administration
(MDA) Programmes. She provided tireless services to
people affected in Tsunami disaster.
MS SHUBHANGIMARUTITALANG
Ms. Talang has provided excellent services under Family
Welfare Programme to the people of Latur district
(MS). She has been awarded for her services in the
year 1995-96, 2003-04, 2005-06 by District Council,
Latur. She provided excellent care to the people devastated
by earthquake in the year 1993.
MS. LASSONG TAMANG
Lassong Tamang is a well known face among the people
of Machong, a remote village that is prone to occurrences
of natural calamities. She has implemented health
care services in the village and accomplished the
targets to the level of 95%. She faces immense hardships
to reach to the villagers in order to attend to the
emergency, as she has to walk long distance on foot.
She is the key person in formulating the Block Action
Plan for the PHC and also in executing services under
all National Health Programmes. She has participated
in TV programmes in bringing awareness to the people
related to health care.

LALEN KAWLI
Lalen Kawli is remembered by the people of Janpui,
PHC for her timely action to save the life of a 40
years old epileptic woman who received serious abdominal
injury resulting in expulsion of small intestine as
a result of fall. It was raining continuously, roads
were blocked by land slide and therefore she could
not be transported to other tertiary level hospitals.
In spite of having a fractured leg, Mrs Lalen Kawli
assisted in that long major surgery by tolerating
the crucial pain. Her prompt action and assistance
in making emergency operation theatre set-up without
light and anesthesia facilities saved the life of
the woman.
