| A
training course for nurse professionals on “Role
of Nurses in Management of Operation Theatre”
was organised during 15 - 22 April 2009 by TNAI at its
New Delhi Headquarters. The overall purpose of the workshop
was to update the knowledge of nurses in management
of operation theatre in the wake of technological advancement
in the field of surgery. Forty-three nurse professionals
from 10 states of the country participated in the workshop.
Participatory approach was adopted for conducting the
workshop. The content areas were covered by various
resource persons using various training methods such
as lecture, discussion and demonstration. As part of
workshop schedule, the participants were involved in
various group activities. They also had an opportunity
to visit CTVS OT, main OT and Neuro Gamma knife centre
of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
The workshop was inaugurated on 15 April 2009 by Dr
Sudhir Josseph, Director, St Stephen Hospital. The inaugural

General,
TNAI and Mrs Nanthini Subbiah, Coordinator CEP. Then
the overview of the workshop was presented by Mrs
Nanthini Subbiah. At the outset, Dr S. Joseph congratulated
TNAI for organising this workshop. He informed the
gathering that due to rapid technological advancement,
the health care practices have become more complicated.
Nurses are challenged to meet the changing demands
of the current health care delivery system.
He
said, it is mandatory for health professionals to
keep pace with the development in the health care
field. He also emphasised the importance of coordinated
efforts of health care providers working in hospital
especially in operation theatre for best outcome of
patient care. Going through the content areas of workshop,
he remarked that the programme has been organised
in an intensive manner. Dr Joseph also referred to
the recent workshop organised by WHO on the theme
“ Safe surgeries save lives”. The inaugural
session ended with the vote of thanks by Mrs Evelyn
P Kannan, Assistant Secretary-General, TNAI.

| Following
the inauguration, the session “Update on Specialised
Surgeries : Role of Nurse on Eye Surgeries” was
taken by Dr Krishna Vaidyanathan of St Stephen Hospital.
The next session was on “Layout and Infrastructure
of Operation Theatre” taken by Ms Sakthi Khati,
ANS, Apollo Hospital. The second day of the workshop
started with the session on Staffing of Operation Theatre
and Specialty Areas by Ms Manju Devi Tyagi, DNS, Fortis
Hospital. She explained at great length the staffing
of Operation theatre. It was followed by a session on
Preparation for Operation by Babji, ANS, St Stephen
Hospital. In the afternoon, the participants had two
continuous sessions on Storage and Handling of Surgical
Instruments and Infection Control in Operation Theater
by Mrs Ansamma, ANS, AIIMS and Mrs Anu Aggarwal of Toxic

of Nursing on day 3. The other sessions covered on
that day were update on Specialised Surgeries “Role
of Nurse on ENT Surgeries” by Dr Varun Gupta,
RML Hospital and Stress Management of Nursing Personnel
working in OT by BK Sangeeta, Brahma Kumaris Rajyoga
Centre. On day 4, the participants had an opportunity
to visit main CTVS OT and Gamma Knife Centre of AIIMS
to comprehend the infrastructure facilities and functioning
of operation theatre. They could also observe the
storage and maintenance of surgical instruments.
The
other sessions covered during workshop were : CTVS
and Lung Surgeries - Nurses Role by Mr Imran Khan,
Nursing Tutor, Delhi Heart and Lung Institute; Role
of Nurses in Abdominal Surgeries by Dr Deepak Govil,
Sr Consultant, Apollo Hospital. Role of nurses in
Genito Urinary Surgeries by Dr Amit, Consultant, Batra
Hospital, Update on Neurological Conditions Requiring
Surgery by Dr Rajesh Acharya, Sr. Consultant and Organ
Transplant - an update by Dr Sandeep Gulerla, Associate
Professor, AIIMS. Besides these sessions three more
subject areas were covered through group work exercises.
The Participants were divided into three groups.
Group I worked out the preparation of protocol for
Pre-operative Period, Group II on Preparation of Protocol
for Intra-operative Period and Group III on Preparation
of Protocol for Post-operative Period. All group work
reports were presented by the participants on the
last day of the workshop in the presence of Chairperson
Mrs Sakthi Kathi, Apollo Hospital. The course was
evaluated on the basis of pre- and post-course evaluation
and participants, feed back on relevance and coverage
of contents and methodology used. On the last day
of the workshop, the concluding session was graced
by Dr Manju Mani, Executive Director, Delhi Heart
and Lung Institute, New Delhi. The valedictory session
started with the welcoming address by Mrs Sheila Seda.
The resume of the workshop was presented by Mrs Nanthini
Subbiah. Dr Manju Mani encouraged participants to
keep abreast with the latest changes with which they
need to be familiar. She also expressed her concern
regarding inadequate nursing training, which in turn,
causes lack of competence and confidence among nurses
in providing quality care to the patients. She concluded
her speech by saying that the lamp lighted by Florence
Nightingale need to be carried forward for many centuries
by competent nurses. The session ended with the vote
