improve the level of patient care in institutional or community
setting. With this background, the Trained Nurses Association of
India (TNAI) organised an 8-day workshop on “Nursing Administration
and Supervision for Effective Patient Care” at its headquarters,
New Delhi during 3-10 February 2010. This workshop
was attended by 26 govt/public/private sector participants from
11 States/ UTs viz. Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Haryana,
Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil
Nadu, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
The broad objective of the workshop was to update and
strengthen the managerial skills of nurse professionals working
at various levels and to enable them to render effective
patient care.
|
The Objectives of the workshop were to:
identify the modern nursing management techniques.
describe various styles and qualities of a nurse leader/manager.
recognise the significance of human relations in nursing management.
appreciate the applicability of performance appraisal for nurses.
promote human resource development in different areas of nursing practice.

apply the knowledge of principles of nursing management and administration in effective patient
care.
Mrs. Sheila Seda, Secretary-General, TNAI welcomed the gathering and introduced the Chief
Guest, Guest of Honor, special invitees and participants. Mrs Evelyn P Kannan, Assistant Secretary-
General TNAI presented a brief introduction to the TNAI Continuing Education Programme.
Inaugurating the workshop, Dr Dileep Mavlankar, the Chief Guest, Chairperson, Centre for
Management of Health Sciences, IIM Ahmedabad, appreciated TNAI initiative in organising the
workshop on one of the most relevant issue today. He cited the monumental contribution of Florence
Nightingale so well known for compassion. Despite scant resources and no help, she improved
the plight of the hospital and the health services through her managerial acumen. She was
a good advocate and social reformer. That’s what we need today, Dr Mavlankar said. He added,
Fredrick W Tayler “father of scientific management”, in the late 1800s identified three factors (i)

right people (ii) right training right measure and (iii) right pay
to improve the organisational productivity. According to Elton
Mayo and his associates, when management paid special attention
to the workers, productivity was likely to increase, regardless
of the environmental working condition. However, Mayo
recommended more employee participation in decision making.
Every manager must know how to manage men, materials
and money. Human resource management is essential and we
need to generate positive response from the consumers. Management
is all about decision making, monitoring the outcome
of the decision-making, he added. As a manager we need to use
our head for thinking, hands to implement, and heart to convince
the worker and leave the positive image. Inaugural ses-

Mrs Jancy Johnson, Secretary,
Nurses League of
CMAI was the Guest of
Honour. She said that all
nurses are leaders and need
to be in forefront in taking decision,
planning and implementing
the care besides active
involvement in issues related
to healthcare. “The largest
contribution to health
care is from the nurses’ she added. Since human beings go on evolving and technologies change every day, so we need to keep
updating our information and knowledge. More than monetary compensation, conducive environment
is what provides them greater satisfaction in effective patient care.
