Inauguration of Florence Nightingale Statue in Narayana
Nursing Institutions, Nellore : Pioneer of nursing, Ms Florence
Nightingale’s statue was inaugurated by Sri M Venkaiah
Naidu, MP in Narayana Nursing Institutions, Nellore on 23 Feb
2009. Dr P Narayana, Chairman, Narayana Group of Educational
Society was guest of honour at this occasion.
Laxmi Memorial College of Nursing, Balmatta, Mangalore:
A programme was conducted on 7 April 2009 at AJ Hospital
to commemorate the World Health Day. The chief guest
was Sr Amitha Marla, Director - AJ Hosp & Res Centre.
The resource persons were Mrs Cheriole K Nair, Dy Nsg
Suptdt, Fr Muller’s Hospital, Mangalore and Dr Animesh
Jain, Asst Prof, Comm Med, KMC, Mangalore. Welcome
speech was delivered by Mrs Shambhavi, which was followed
by auspicious lamp lighting ceremony and speech
by Dr Amitha Marla. The College Principal, Prof Mrs Larissa
Martha Sams and Mrs Diana Lobo, HOD - Fundamentals of
Nsg Dept also addressed the gathering. Later, the staff
members held a panel discussion on the theme.
Alva’s College of Nursing, Moodbidri :
Nurses Day
was celebrated on 14 May 2009 on the theme ‘Delivering
Quality, Serving Communities, Nurses Leading Care Innovation’.
Prof Baby S Nayak from Manipal College of Nursing
as Chief Guest, advised the nurses to be more innovative and active especially in case of emergency. The inaugural
was presided over by Prof BA Yathikumara Swamy Gowda,
Principal of the college. Prof Alice Salins, Vice Principal,
highlighted the significance of the day. Other dignitaries in
the function included Mrs KJ Rosa, Principal, Alva’s Inst of
Nsg Sciences, Mrs Jipi Varghese, Lecturer, Alva’s College
of Nsg, and Mr Aldrin Vas who was the MC for the day.
The chief guest distributed prizes to the winners of events
like quiz, skit, model exhibition and elocution. Ms Rajeswari,
Lecturer was the overall coordinator. The function was
followed by cultural programme.
Sri Gokulam College of Nursing, Salem :
An international
conference on ‘Midwives - Challenges in
Emergency Maternal & Newborn Care’ was organised
on 12-13 June 2009. Giving birth to a child remains
one of the biggest health risk for women world-wide;
1500 women die every day while giving birth, that
translates to half a million maternal deaths globally.
Every year about 78,000 mothers die in child birth and
from complications of pregnancy in India (UNICEF).
Current MMR in India is 450/100,000 population. India’s
millennium development goals call for a reduction in
MMR to 109 by 2015. At the outset, Prof A Jayasudha,
Principal & Organising Chairperson welcomed the
gathering. Dr K Arthanari, Managing Trustee of Sri
Gokulam College of Nsg presided over the function.
The conference theme was unveiled by Dr M
Prakasamma, Director, Answers, Hyderabad. Special
address was given by Ms Judith Marie Brown,
Driector, Nsg & Midwifery Development, DOHMS,
Dubai, the immediate past Director of ICM. Prof Dr K
Meer Mustafa Hussain, Vice Chancellor, Tamilnadu Dr
MGR Medical University, Chennai, the chief guest,
highlighted the delivery of effective health care. He
added, reduction of maternal and infant mortality and
morbidity rates in our country has been a continuous
challenge for us. He told that the Tamilnadu Dr MGR
Medical University and the Government had undertaken
various initiatives such as reorienting the syllabi,
new specialised course in MCH and incentives to
those working in PHCs. He called upon the doctors
and nurses to render their services in rural area where
medicare was inadequate. Mrs K Amudha, Asso Prof
and Organising Secy gave the vote of thanks. Scientific
sessions on different aspects of Emergency Maternal
and Newborn Care involved eminent speakers
from India and abroad. Around 300 deligates from
various countries participated in the conference.
