NJI Celebrates the Century
It is a matter of much pleasure for me to share with you my perceptions, feelings
and thoughts while Nursing Journal of India (NJI), the monthly organ of Trained
Nurses of India (TNAI) completes one hundred years of its existence. Soon after
the formation of TNAI way back in 1908, there was a felt need to bring out a
means to vent out the concerns of the nursing community, the inaugural issue of
NJI came into being, precisely in this very month i.e. in February 1910. The voyage
of NJI has been inching forward at tandem with TNAI, the umbrella organisation of
which NJI is an offshoot though with an entity of its own.
The quality and content of the monthly journal has been something to be
proud of, that also bespeaks of the dedication and the hard work with which
its editorial team has ever worked, through the preceding ten decades. Another
unique feature of NJI has been the regularity of bringing out the monthly
always in time, without missing any issues. Indeed it may be very hard to find
out whether periodicals with so long a tradition continue to exist. The TNAI,
itself a non-profit organisation, must have put in lot of efforts in this century,
that goes without saying.
Success can be achieved by any organisation only with support and good
wishes of the members of the organisation of which NJI is the mouthpiece. It’s
true, the credit of success of NJI goes to over two lakh-strong members who
include nurses, auxiliary nurse midwives, student nurses and lady health visitors,
whose interests, aspirations and concerns NJI has always been campaigning
and advocating through its pages and otherwise. Contributing to success and
growth of NJI have been two other segments: authors who have been contributing
articles and reports; and advertisers without whose unswerving support
publication of NJI would have been indeed tough job.
As a follow-up the decisions of Editorial Advisory Board of NJI and also
the resolutions of Executive / Council of TNAI, we have been striving to make
NJI more relevant and useful to the requirements of readers. Availability of
adequate funds to make the journal more attractive has been a major handicap
with us. However, we are considering how it can be made more informative
for our readers. Towards this end, any suggestions from your end shall be
highly appreciated.
