Many More Miles to go …

As the year passes by, a review of some of the highlights is in order.TNAI submitted a memorandum for revision of pay structure of nurses on behalf of the nursing community in the country to the Sixth Central Pay Commission on December 29, 2006. The memorandum was prepared by a core committee specially constituted for this purpose which collected inputs from various sectors of the nursing community.Nightingale awards were given to 17 nurses by the then President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at Rashtrapati Bhawan on International Nurses Day: May12, 2007.

It was after a gap of 21 years that the awards were given away. Construction work for the Central Institute of Nursing and Research and Elderly Care Home at Knowledge Park III, Greater NOIDA, near Delhi is in full swing. While contribution from nurse colleagues is pouring slowly, more vigorous efforts are required to collect the funds to complete the project on time. The dream of completing the Central Institute of Nursing and Research and Elderly Care Home can be realized only if the contributions pick up speed. All of us have to tap every source available so that we soon have enough funds.

The construction is on but we still have to go a long way. The lane outside TNAI Headquarters in Green Park was named Florence Nightingale Lane. It was a historic event because nowhere in the country a road is named after the legendary Nightingale.TNAI is all set to celebrate its centenary next year. A Centenary Celebrations Committee with the Hon'ble Union Minister for Health and Family welfare, Dr. A. Ramadoss as Chairperson has been constituted.

While we can derive some satisfaction from whatever we have achieved, we still have to go a long way. The work for the centenary celebrations will soon get a big boost with the first full fledged meeting of the Centenary Celebrations Committee under the Chairmanship of the Hon'ble Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare slated to be held soon.
