A Day to Remember
March 8 is International Women’s Day. The day
was established in 1977 by the United Nations
and provides and opportunity to celebrate the
progress made to advance equality for women and
to assess the challenges that remain. This
special day also provides an opportunity to
consider steps to bringing about equality for
women in all their diversity.
International Women’s Day is the
story of ordinary women as makers of history; it
is rooted in the centuries old struggle of women
seeking to participate equally in society on an
equal footing with men. Until women are fully
represented at senior leadership levels of
public, professional and economic life, women do
not have equal rights nor equal voice.
As important health professionals,
nurses make specific contribution towards the
improvement of women’s health and development.
TNAI through its State/UT Branches support
empowering of women by enabling them to make
informed choice for a healthier life by
eradicating discrimination under the law and in
practice, particularly in the areas of
education, training and employment.
Nurses can help in empowerment of women by
giving right information regarding health and
related services; by strengthening preventive
programmes that promote women’s health:, by
conducting research and disseminating
information on women’s health and by providing
comprehensive health cares to women especially
on reproductive health and sexually transmitted
diseases.
