Making Life Pleasurable :
Towards a Society for All Ages
With wide availability of better health care facilities and general increase in longevity the
world over, the proportion of the elderly (aged 60 and above) is on the increase. The
elderly, with their rich experience and insights, constitute a vital workforce that can contribute
tangibly in several areas. However, it is unfortunate that most of them continue to be
marginalised, and victims of loneliness, neglect and isolation. The situation is more deplorable
in developed countries where the familial ties and human relationships are not as
strong as in our land.
It’s in this backdrop of general apathy, nay disregard by the youngsters towards
the elderly that the International Day of Older Persons is celebrated on 1 October
every year. The theme for 2009 is, “Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the International
Year of Older Persons: Towards a Society for All Ages”. Programmes are
therefore organised to create public awareness on sensitising the public towards the
senior citizens. Some concrete steps that community can take in providing relief to the
elderly include: showing respect to the elderly, appreciating their achievements and
giving ears to their grievances, visiting them, offering prayers in their honour, taking
the young ones to the old-age homes, etc.
Elderly Care Home (ECH) coming up near Delhi in Greater Noida and
the special care of the aged by TNAI members reveals the concern of TNAI
for the senior citizens. The ECH project is likely to become operational within
a year. TNAI shall ensure that the oldsters in their charge are provided
state-of-the-art care and relief.
