margin-right: 5px"> <div align="center" style="margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px"> <p align="center"><strong> <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Education &amp; Literacy Can No Longer Be Neglected </font></strong></p> <p align="justify">When someone said, &#8220;Without teachers, there would be no class in the world&#8221;, more was meant than its literal meaning. For, it is the education which makes children an asset to the society and the nation at large. It was Dr S Radhakrishnan, former President and great educationist, whose birthday on 5 September we celebrate as Teachers&#8217; Day. Students today are in greater need of direction than ever in past, thus demanding a lot from the teaching community: a challenge to the teaching community that must be acted upon in earnest. <br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Illiteracy is yet another factor hampering the development in most developing countries. As on date, some 776 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate; 75 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out. In this backdrop, at the call of UNESCO, International Literacy Day is celebrated on 8 September. The day highlights the significance of literacy among individuals, communities and societies. Rise in literacy levels would enable nurses to more effectively deliver the services and messages to the ailing and their attendants. We should therefore contribute to expanding literacy at individual or community levels. <br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The month of September is also marked by Alzheimer&#8217;s Day, observed on 21 September, to create awareness about Alzheimer&#8217;s disease (AD), and providing comfort to those affected. The disease leads to in loss of memory, attrition of intellectual and thinking abilities and changes in personality and behaviour. Alzheimer&#8217;s Day seeks to mitigate the woes of victims of AD so that appropriate preventive and supportive measures for relief of such patients. The Position Statement TNAI on Nurses&#8217; Role in Care of the Elderly seeks to &#8220;provide holistic, quality care nursing to the elderly in India&#8221; and thus supports governmental and non-governmental programmes targeting the health and welfare of the elderly.
